Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910), also referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy is the author of two of the most famous and widely read novels on earth: War and Peace and Anna Karenina. His realist fiction has exerted enormous influence on writers the world over. Tolstoy experienced a moral and spiritual crises in 1870 and started to follow pacifist doctrine. His writing on non-violence influenced Ghandi and Martin Luther King Jr.

Influenced by his time as a young officer in the Russian Army during the Crimean War, Tolstoy's worldview was greatly shaped by his experiences. These events greatly influenced his work and eventually led to a moral crisis in the 1870s. He then turned to a literal interpretation of Christian teachings, particularly Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, viewing the commandment to turn the other cheek as a "non-resistance to evil by force." The included manuscript is a passionate reflection of his pacifism, a letter written in Russian to an unknown conscientious objector seeking Tolstoy's counsel after refusing military service.
Experience Tolstoy's spiritual evolution through his 1882 masterpiece, A Confession. Renouncing his aristocratic lifestyle, he devoted the rest of his days to the pursuit of nonviolent ideals. Shortly before his death to pneumonia, he spread love and peace to travelers at the Astapovo train station. At 82, he was honored by a large crowd during his funeral procession.
