During the 19th century, numerous architects submitted design proposals for the renovation of the Duomo di Milano. Among them was Paolo Cesa Bianchi, who presented a series of architectural drawings for the interior vaults. In 1881, he was appointed as the engineer-architect of the Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano, a position he held for over 30 years until 1912.
The Cathedral, managed by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, took over six centuries to build and involved the contributions of architects, sculptors, artists, and engineers. This resulted in a remarkable and distinctive architectural masterpiece that seamlessly merged the international Gothic style with the "Lombard aesthetic". The Duomo is also believed to be the building with the most statues and figures in the world.
