Rebels: About the phenomenal success of the Asterix Comics
The idea of Asterix and Obelix comic strips was born in 1951 when Comics authors Albert Uderzo and Rene Goscinny first met at the offices of a Brussels comics publisher. The first comic strip about the tiny village in Gaul during the days of the Roman Empire was published in the french comics magazine Pilote in 1959. The Village and its cast of comic characters Led by Asterix and his best friend Obelix appealed to readers with their fierce dedication to independence, their freedom and general disregard for authority. In 1961 the comic strips of the first two years were bundled in book form and the steady march to world domination had started. To date over 375 Million copies of the adventures of Asterix have been sold world wide with the comic translated into 111 languages.
