Paperblanks Lion's Den - Sybil Pye Bindings 3.75 x 5.5 Mini Journal
Pocket Notebook with Lion Design Art Deco Cover
Sybil Pye (1879-1959), a renowned female British bookbinder, crafted this eye-catching Art Deco design. Exposure to bookbinding and a passion for art ran in her family - her father being a collector of Asian and contemporary art. Drawing from Douglas Cockerell's classic text "Bookbinding and the Care of Books", Pye worked diligently to teach herself the craft of bookbinding, completing her first creation in 1906.
This design, drawn from the image of a lion and featuring deep tones of red, black, green and brown reminiscent of luxurious leather, was created to house the Fitzwilliam Museum's collection of William Wordsworth poems. You can find the original at the University of Cambridge in the UK. The poetry collection was illustrated by Pye's lifelong friend Thomas Sturge Moore and printed by Ballantyne Press.
Honoring the trailblazing talents of Sybil Pye, an innovative female binder who was the only artisan of her kind in England (and among an exclusive few across the world) to specialize in the art of inlaid leather bindings. Paperblanks pays homage to the iconic work of Sybil Pye with their debut replication, the Lion's Den mini journal.
